This is a story idea of mine from a dream about Buckley the Mole Boy and his origins, and is the first of many story ideas of mine.
This story idea takes place in a world where there used to be a sub-terrain race of mole people, and begins in a dark underground room in the shape of a dome where a boy named Buckley is settling down on what appears to be a bed. He has dusty brown hair, round ears larger than that of humans, and a short stubby furry mole tail through a small hole in the back of his pants. Even though Buckley looks like he could pass as a human in the upper world if not for his ears and tail, he is not human as he is of a race of mole people who took on the appearance of human. They are of a subterranean race that live entirely underground in subterranean cities and have never been seen above ground by upper-worlders because they don’t come up to the surface in the daytime and rarely come up to the surface at night. The mole people were once at peace with the upper-worlders, but a rumor going around about them having valuable treasure has caused them to be sought after by greedy upper-worlders who have ruined their subterranean cities. This led to the mysterious disappearance of the mole people where only Buckley and his mother remain.
As far as Buckley can remember, his mother has always been at his side until one day something happened and she had to leave in search of something or someone. He can't remember who or what his mother needed to find, but it has been several days since then and he was forced to live on stored food in his chamber. Buckley still hopes his mother will return soon even though he is beginning to think something bad had happened to her. One day while lying in his bed and wondering where his mother is, Buckley suddenly hears drilling coming from somewhere above the ceiling of his dome that sounds like someone is trying to penetrate it from above. This causes Buckley to become very afraid he is no longer safe here and starts thinking about leaving his room, but then realizes there isn’t much left of the underground for him to go to for safety. Since he was born underground and spent most of his time underground, his body is very frail meaning poor Buckley can’t even go outside in the daytime. Being born that way, Buckley decides going topside is not be an option for him.
He continues thinking about what he is going to do and gets an idea he hopes will work as he remembers seeing something in the garage on the other side of a hidden tunnel he had followed days ago. Moments later, Buckley decides he has no other choice but to head back to the garage in hopes whatever he saw the other day will provide him protection from the bright sunlight. He soon picks up his bag containing a few gemstones his mother gave him before she left and climbs through a nearby hole into a smaller room where the entrance to the hidden tunnel leading up to the garage is. Upon entering the smaller room, Buckley moves something aside to access the hidden tunnel. He then moves it back behind him to hopefully conceal it and makes his way up the hidden tunnel toward the garage. Buckley soon comes to the other end of the hidden tunnel and pushes another object aside to reopen the secret way into the garage. Luckily for him, the lights in the garage are not turned on. Finding it dark in the garage and safe for him to be here, Buckley pushes the object back into place to re-hide the secret tunnel and starts looking around the garage for what he has seen the other day.
A few minutes later, he sees a pair of dark glasses sitting on a table with a dark green hooded cloak hanging on a nearby chair. Remembering this is what he has seen the other day when he was here, Buckley heads over to the table and chair and sets his bag of gemstones down to try on the glasses and cloak. Just after putting the glasses and cloak on, he finds they fit him okay and picks his bag of gemstones back up. He then puts his bag of gemstones in one of the cloak's pockets and turns to head to the side door to go outside. When he comes to the side door, Buckley opens it to see the daylight is dark in the glasses and comfortable for his eyes. Finding he is protected from the bright sunlight by the glasses as well as the cloak also concealing his abnormal large ears and short stubby furry mole tail, he heads outside and leaves the garage. Upon closing the garage side door, Buckley starts thinking about confronting whoever is drilling and about to destroy his home to see if he can stop them. Just as he turns to go in the direction to where the drilling is, he realizes the glasses and cloak he has on may belong to whoever is drilling.
Thinking this might put him in danger here, Buckley decides to try another approach and reaches into his bag of gemstones. He gets out a certain gemstone to use and says a set of magic words he learned from his mother which makes it glow and change his form to look like a normal ground squirrel. In his ground squirrel form, Buckley finds even though he is missing his gemstones as well as the glasses and cloak he found back in the garage, the bright sunlight is not bothering him. He decides this form will have to do and scurries over toward where the drilling should be located. Minutes later, he approaches a house with a wide ditch going from it to somewhere else that appears to have been recently dug. Seeing the coast is clear for the time being, Buckley approaches the ditch and looks down into it to see it has been dug three to four feet deep to lay down a pipe or something. He finds it is not deep enough to reach his home and nothing is being drilled here for that matter. Buckley then turns away from the ditch to see what appears to be the circular stone wall of a well nearby.
Upon seeing a pile of fresh dirt and a drill machine next to the well with the drill above the well itself, Buckley realizes whoever is working and drilling here is the one about to destroy his home and starts to think of a way to stop this. He soon heads over to a large maple tree away from the construction site to continue thinking and try to come up with a plan on what to do here. While hanging around the maple tree, Buckley gets startled by a man who had noticed them there and has come to chase him away with a blunt object. As he dodges left and right to avoid getting hit, he hears the man saying, “You don’t get it, do you. I want you gone.” Buckley takes off scurrying away while unsure of what this man means. He scurries quickly toward a fence that is thickly covered in vines and plants and quickly ducks to go through a hole underneath it. Just after going under the fence, he stops scurrying and turns to look back to see the man hasn’t given chase. Buckley goes back over near the fence and looks through an opening in the leaves to see the man in the distance heading away in another direction.
Seeing the man appearing to be satisfied with him leaving the yard, he decides he is safe for now and heads away from the fence to the front of the house to continue thinking of a way to try to save his home. While Buckley sits there thinking, a little girl notices him and comes over to pick him up thinking he is cute. He finds himself being carried to the front door of the house by the girl and wonders what she is going to do with him. The girl soon takes him inside the house and upstairs like she is going to keep him for a pet or something. A few minutes later, the girl comes to the top of the stairs and takes him into her room to a wire guinea pig cage that appears to be empty. Just as she sets him down inside it, she closes the door on it and locks him inside it. Finding he is now trapped inside a cage, Buckley starts to look around the room. He sees he can get a view of the construction site from one of the girl's windows and begins thinking of how to get out of the cage and over to it. Several minutes later, Buckley notices the girl leaving her room and closing the bedroom door behind her. He continues thinking of how to get out of the cage as time slowly goes by.
A while later, Buckley notices the bedroom door opening and the girl coming back into her room. She comes up to him in the cage and soon unlocks and opens the cage to let him come out. Buckley realizes this could be his only chance to get out of the cage as the girl wants to pet him or something. He leaves the cage and makes his way down to the floor while the girl is allowing him to do that. Upon reaching the floor, Buckley scurries over to the window and climbs up on the windowsill to look out it. He looks down at the construction site to see the man he had encountered by the maple tree at the drill starting the drill back up. Seeing the man lowering the drill back down into the well again to continue drilling, Buckley decides not to watch and climbs back down off the windowsill. Just as he gets back down on the floor, he notices the girl has left him alone there with the door to her room left open. He goes back to thinking of a way to try to save his home as he scurries out of the girl’s room. Buckley cautiously scurries down the stairs to the living room and sees no one there at the moment. He starts to wander into the dinning room and finds he doesn’t hear the drill outside anymore.
Thinking the man has decided to take a break again, Buckley finds he has more time to come up with a way to try to save his home. Just as he is about to turn and go somewhere else to think, he notices the man coming into the dining room from the kitchen. The man unfortunately spots him again and comes after him with another blunt object while saying, “You still don’t get it, do you.” Finding himself in danger of the man once again, Buckley takes off scurrying into the living room and out the front door which was left open by the girl. He quickly scurries down off the porch and finds a bush to hide in before the man can get to the front door. Just after hiding in a bush, he looks back at the front door to see the man there closing it instead of coming out to look for him. Buckley finds this is the second time he had gotten chased away by the man and begins wondering why he has a hatred for ground squirrels. While pondering the man’s reasons for hating ground squirrels, he reminds himself that he should be focusing on trying to save his home. He goes back to thinking about how he is going to do that and decides he is going to need a new plan of action since the front door is now closed.
A short while later, Buckley hears the front door opening back up and looks out from his hiding spot in the bush to see who is there. He sees the girl who carried him into the house and put him in a cage has opened the front door back up to come outside and see what the commotion was. Buckley decides this is his chance to get back into the house and comes out of his hiding spot in the bush. He quickly scurries up onto the porch and goes by the girl as he heads back into the house. Just after reentering the living room, Buckley looks around to see no one else around and no sign of the man who keeps chasing him away with his hatred for ground squirrels either. Finding he is safe for the time being, he scurries up the stairs to go back upstairs. When he comes to the top of the stairs, Buckley notices the door to the girl’s room nearby is still open along with other open doors to other rooms. Seeing there are other rooms other than the girl’s room here, he begins thinking he might be able to get a better view of the construction site from another room where he could get a better angle on how to try to save his home.
Figuring this is the only idea he has right now, Buckley decides to take the risk and heads into a nearby room to his left. Upon entering the room, he starts looking around and soon sees a woman lying in the nearby bed. Buckley notices the woman is looking in the opposite direction and didn’t see him come in the room. He figures this must be the girl’s mother and gets an idea he is not sure will work or not. The idea he just thought of is changing back into his normal self and seeing if the girl’s mother will have enough sympathy for him to want to help. Thinking this might work, Buckley decides to try it and prepares his approach. Just as he is about to say another set of magic words he learned from his mother to change his form back to his normal form, the girl shows up at the top of the stairs and startles him when he hears her saying, "Time to put you back in your cage. This time you are staying in it as you are not getting out again." Upon hearing the girl, Buckley realizes he will be trapped in the cage for good if she catches him. He quickly moves to avoid getting picked up again and leads the girl down the hall while trying to communicate with her in his ground squirrel form.
This causes the girl to become confused and unable to figure out what he is doing. Buckley then speaks the magic words to change his form back to normal and surprises the girl when she sees his ground squirrel form changing back into his normal form. In his normal form, he finds his gemstones as well as the glasses and cloak he found in the garage have returned. Even though the glasses and cloak are concealing his abnormally large ears and short stubby furry mole tail, Buckley sees the girl starting to back up while looking a bit confused as to what he is and says to her, “Don’t be afraid, I mean you no harm. I just need to speak to your mother.” He heads past the girl and back down the hall to the room where he had seen the woman lying in a bed. Upon entering the room, he approaches the woman still lying in a bed and says to her, “Hi there, I need your help.” She turns to see him and gets startled saying, “Who are you and what is with the getup?” Buckley attempts to explain to the woman that he is a mole boy from the underground who has lost his mother and the man outside drilling the well is about to destroy his home.
When he finishes his explanation, he starts wondering if the woman will take sympathy for him when she responds to him saying, “I’ll see what I can do.” Thinking the woman is going to be getting up to go talk to the man, Buckley turns to leave the room and heads downstairs into the living room. He slowly heads through the dining room and enters the kitchen while hoping the man has gone outside. Buckley finds the man isn’t in the dining room or kitchen and goes to the back door. He looks out the back door to the construction site to see a rope hanging down into the well for some reason. Wondering why that rope is there, Buckley cautiously opens the back door and slowly heads outside. He looks around to see the man is nowhere to be seen and finds it is safe for the time being. Buckley makes his way over to the well and looks down it. He sees a collapsed hole in the roof of his room and finds it is too late to save his home. Seeing the rope hanging down through the collapsed hole, he decides it is no longer safe to return to his home as the man has probably gone down to explore.
Buckley soon turns to leave and begins wondering where he is going to go now and becomes sad as he heads through the yard to the front gate. When he comes to the front gate, he opens it and quickly passes through it to leave the yard. He takes one last look at the house and yard before turning away to leave. As he walks down the street, Buckley becomes sadder not knowing where there is a safe place to go now that he home is destroyed. Since the man has never seen him in his normal form or wearing the glasses and cloak he took from the garage, he probably won’t even come looking for him. For all he knows, the man likely doesn’t know he exists and will be long gone before he even suspects anything. Buckley decides for now to head somewhere far away to be safe and plan his search for his lost mother. As he continues walking along down the street, he runs into a few kids and anthropomorphic characters who introduce themselves as Erik, Alice, and friends. He finds they seem friendly enough and decides to explain to them that he is a mole boy from a subterranean race that mysteriously disappeared when they were sought after by greedy upper-worlders who ruined their subterranean cities while in search of valuable treasure.

They also tell him that they will find him a place to stay back at their home while they try to find his lost mother. Finding he now has friends who are willing to help him, this makes Buckley happy. As they continue along in their adventure, Buckley tells them about his a ground squirrel form he can turn into with the help of a certain gemstone and that he may have other abilities and enhancements if he finds other gemstones to use. Erik, Alice, and friends agree to help find him gemstones as this could be useful. Where they go to next is likely to be in the actual long story of mine.
